Consider this a dare for partners in committed relationships who enjoy horror films: Sit down with your partner and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit just made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like conventional biological terror, but within Together exists a deep meditation about our choices in loving each other.
A Debut Feature Exploring Relationship Dynamics
Together marks the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for over ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the actors bring a special spark to their characters, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.
The story commences when the couple relocate from the metropolis to the country for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, of course, but that’s mostly where the cliches cease. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.
A Paranormal Spark
While walking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the protagonists fall into an underground cave. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a strange force starts to affect the duo. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.
The whole movie is a slow burn of scares, weaving in moments of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but never too gross) physical transformations, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and delivers them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.
Layered Performances
A great deal of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.
Conversely, Tim senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and distant from his network of friends. He is terrified of the notion of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is intensified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for getting around.
Shanks’ smartest move in this movie avoids making either of his characters the obvious villain.
Both characters confront the type of challenges that come with long-term unions after ten years. Deep down, they still love one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their future together.
Symbolism and Metaphor
While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to another person, the symbolism does not come across as hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in harmony.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a strong argument for staying single. On the other hand, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.
Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could act as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your significant other and say, “I’d do that for you”?
Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can undertake today.
Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
